I just stumbled upon this site and memories rushed back! I went to the infants school when it was a wooden hut in Old Mill Lane, near to Priory Close (where I was born in 1941) and I think the Teacher was Miss Alban who I believe married and became miss Grey. I seem to remember her coming to school on a bicycle. From there I went to the "Big School" in Cheapside Lane and the Head Master was Mr Thompson, who was replaced by Mr Entwhistle. I remember Mr. Rudman, Miss Carr, Mr Taylor. I also recall that there was what I believe was an orphanage nearbye called "The Lea" and there were quite a few kids in my class from there but can only remember one name which was a girl called Sonia Hall. there was also a boy with artificial legs who took them off to swim at Uxbridge open air pool, Some boys in my class were Alan Sharp, Norman Swallow, Peter Bunce, Gerald Dumbalton, David Polyket, are any of you still around? I live in Ruislip now and have never moved far from Denham, apart from two years in the merchant navy, and a year in Seattle, Washington State.

REPLAY: Thank you for visiting our site and sharing your memories with us. We hope you get to reunite with some of your old classmates.

What a nice surprise to find this website. I was a pupil at the school way back in 1964-66 and can still remember the teachers there, Mrs Monaghan and Mrs Wilson. The effect of Primary school must have had a big impact on me as I am now a parent governor at High Wycombe C of E Combined and am enjoying every minute of it. If there is anyone out there that I went to school with and remembers me please get in touch.

As a former pupil,1975-79,was amazed to stumble across your brilliant web site, bringing back loads of memories in the process! There was mrs monaghan, very strict but lovely, and the head was mrs harper if i remember correctly? In the playground were a couple of large concrete tunnel type things we used to play in,and the school dinners were eaten in an old building out the back, hopefully the dinners are better now, dont know if health and safety would pass the old five pence pieces we used to get in our xmas pudding now! Best memory was the the 100 yr anniversary in 76 (i think),when we all dressed up in victorian clothes and even had a feature on nationwide on bbc1 doing a piece! have a great photo i will send..Good luck for the the future and keep up the great and hard work!

Great to see the site of my old school,I started in 1948,and my first teacher was Mrs B.A.Dickinson,who lived in a house in the lane.
I still have all my school reports to December 1954 when I left.

I can remember walking up the lane to get our lunch at the main school.
The class size is on each report, and in one year it was 41,and most years in the high 30?s.
After Easter we used to go on the bus once a week to Belmont road Uxbridge, and walk from there up to the open air pool, our allotted time was 10am and it was always freezing cold .
The head master was (gaffer) Thompson,I got the cane off him twice,he was followed by Roy Entwhistle, never had the cane from him,but he went red in the face, and his voice rose when he rebuked you.
Other teachers were Miss E.M.Richards,who married and became Mrs.Cossey.
Mr.Rudman,Miss Martin,(N. Levine) (M. Bramwell)
The school meals were very bland in those days of rationing,
Any veg as long as it was greens, any potato as long as it was boiled, meat as long as it was Mutton, and the sweet or afters as we called it was invariably something that had the texture of frogspawn.

I was once a pupil at Denham School1947-1951,along time ago! I have very happy memories and remember Miss Martin as being one of my favorite teachers of all time. I was quite delighted to find the new web site and can see that many changes have occurred since my days. i remember there was a wall in the middle of the playground, separating the boys and girls . I am now living in the US close to SF but hold England and especially Denham village close to my heart.

REPLY: Thank you so much for your message Joyce and for sharing your memories wth us. We will have to tell the children at school today about the wall that used to separate the boys and girls! I wonder what they will make of that?

Whilst I might be one of the younger past-pupils on the guestbook it's still been 12 years since i've stepped foot inside the school. I believe my year was one of the first to have a brick put in the millennium wall! Many fond memories! From what I can see of the pictures it's changed so much! I would love to come and visit again some time.

What a great find. I went to school here in the very early '70's. I still have a vivid memory to thinking I had discovered a wolf in the corner of the playing field, hidden in the bushes. I had to be consoled by a dinner lady. I remember the snarling, and for some strange reason, it's hot breath! Must have had quite a vivid imagination. It's odd, as I was explaining this to my daughter only last week.
My other memory was having my shorts pulled down in the corridor by my friend as a teacher walked by. Oh well...

Hello everyone at Denham Village Infant School. Wow! i don't belive it is me who is saying that I miss my school, i don't belive that I have left my school, it is like a dream! I was looking at the website, and suddenly I felt very very sad! I saw my holiday homework (Hong Kong) and my pictures of the christmas play as a cat, my best performance ever!!! i enjoy that very much, also my picture of a painted buterfly face, suddenly, I have tearful eyes and i wanted to go back to my privious school, i miss everybody and I miss fantastic friday and cooking on friday. I have my first birthday invitation at my new school, so that would make me happy!! I will come and see everybody one day!

It is lovely to see that my old First School (1972-5) is thriving and still looks like a real haven for education as it should be. I particularly like the Healthy initiatives and hope your current parents will get behind them wholeheartedly... I wonder whether I would have enjoyed a piece of fruit or veg instead of the ice cold bottles of milk we had at morning break!

I have so many vivid and happy memories of the School, rooted I think in its ethos of creative play and strong feeling of community - my Mum says I always wanted to go to School! I remember many opportunities and much encouragement to make things and to use our imaginations, from having time to explore the dressing-up box (and posing for a polaroid in Mrs Monaghan's office, wonderful headmistress at the time) to making a macrame bag (well, it was the 70s after all!) Of course, I also loved the annual Easter bonnet competition...

I am now a practising Doll Artist, and I am sure that my experiences in my First School have contributed greatly to my make-up. I had many interesting and lively friends at the School, and if they, like me, wander back down Cheapside Lane at any time, I hope they too get a little weepy thrill of recognition. Keep up the good work and best wishes!
REPLY: Thank you for getting in touch, Louise. We love to hear from former pupils. We're glad that our website acts a link. We try very hard to encourage creativity and healthy lifestyles. We have lots of fun as we learn...who knows, we may even revive macrame!

Good to see your site, the boys still talk of your school and miss it very much. Oscar is attending a special school and is doing well. He still has his moments! Hugh and Alister are coming on well and growing like mad. We hope to build a house this year, it is on hold until I return.

What a wonderful find. My old school with such a neat website! This was Secondary school for both me and my sister, Thelma. I left in 1954, my sister in 1958, as far as I can remember!

We lived in New Denham where we went to primary school.

I walked from New Town Road to the school each day, whatever the weather!

My uncle and aunt lived opposite the pub near the school. I once stayed with them and went to the infant school which was the large room on the left, in about 1946.

The headmaster Mr. Entwhistle loved hockey! We played hockey and rounders on the field behind the school. I often came top in art, and some of my paintings were framed and hung in the corridor.

I was confirmed in St Mary's Church, and my parents and other family are buried there.
Even though I have lived most of my adult life in New Zealand, Denham is where I come from. So, I feel a strong attachment especially to the school.

When I visit the U.K. I often visit the village with my sister. The school looks just the same as it did all those years ago.

I was looking for some history of the village when I saw your website. What a great find!
Thank you.

Hey! I just came across this website so thought I'd leave a message! I used to go to the school a few years ago [1993 - 96] before moving off to Devon which is where I'm at now, doing gcse's in a couple of weeks time and probably off to College next term/year to study to be a doctor or nurse.. not too sure which yet either that or try and become an actress and get a part on Casualty or Holby [seem to be obsessed with them programmes and often end up travelling to the sets where they are filmed meeting the actors & actresses either that or travelling round the country meeting up with fans of it from a website I belong to about it!] So, anyway, just thought I'd say hey to everyone, I shall shurrup rambling now! Hope everyones doing ok up in Denham! :) xxx

Hi To All The Children & Staff at Denham Village Infant School!

It was such a pleasure to visit and do the Face Painting for you on 2.4.04 at your 'Easter Egg Hunt.' Everyone seemed to really enjoy the day! What lucky children you all are!

Thank you so much for your hospitality. The coffee and biscuits were most welcome! Thank you also for collecting me from and returning me to the Train Station! My thanks also to the lady that showed me round the village.

You have every reason to congratulate yourselves! The Staff work very hard to ensure the children have a warm, secure, comfortable environment in which to study and this is reflected by the excellent behaviour of all the young students!

I hope to come and paint you all again soon! I had so much fun!

Hope everyone had a Happy Easter!

Kindest Regards,
Nicole

Hello to Everyone

We hope you are all ok. We are enjoying living in Cyprus. We miss all our friends and our teachers and staff at the school. Dad will send some photos, but we have had problems with the computer (he's supposed to know how to fix them!). It is hot here now, but when we flew out it was cold, and our house was freezing. Our new school is very big, and we are very busy there.

Bye for now

Great web site, was nice to see the old school after so many years, I was a pupil in the 1940s when it was Old Denham School, and I can remember well Miss Martin and her love of wild flowers, and also Mr Thompson the head master, I can't say I have any pleasent memories of him!! I came to New Zealand in 1967 and ended up as a teacher at Eltham Tech Centre, retiring in 2001, keep up the good work.

Fantastic website, congratulations.

I have very happy memories of Denham Village School. I left in 1975. It has changed so much. I note your policy on encouraging parents to help. In the 70's a letter was sent out asking Parents to help by contributing their special skills and their time. My Nan (Mrs Fryer) used to come into school every week and hear us read in the library - and continued to do so for many years after I had left. There were lots of other parents who used to help too - I remember learning pottery, cookery and macrame.

I loved the pictures of old Denham. My grandad lived in one of those cottages and attended the School in the early 1900's.
